MESSAGE
FROM CHAIRMAN

It gives me great sense of
satisfaction and pleasure to see and share the growth of our company in the face
of highly competitive times through which Indian telecom sector is
passing.
In
order to establish a fine customer interface, the MTNL has taken various
initiatives viz. launch of “MTNL Infoline and MTNL Newsline” in Delhi and
“ED Online and 4-Message System” in Mumbai. These initiatives are aimed at
adding another dimension in providing information about various schemes of MTNL,
grievance handling and bill collection eventually to bring about complete
customer satisfaction. MTNL also continues to offer attractive schemes to
customers of basic services, mobile services & Internet services and expects
greater market participation in these services in days to come. The corporation
is also readying for optimal utilization of existing copper cable by offering
ADSL Broadband services at most affordable rates.
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited
is making its entry in the field of M-commerce too, which will enable the
customers to transact business with the help of his mobile phone or similar hand
held devices. A pilot project is going on.
Indian telecom sector is in its
transition phase and therefore changes are recurring at faster pace. MTNL is
keeping its services very competitive in the market to ensure that the basic
schemes under every category of service are within the very reach of the masses.
This was precisely the reason why MTNL hiked only GSM long distance rates
marginally, thus absorbing major chunk of impact resulting from implementation
of IUC regime.
For providing improved
connectivity, coverage and congestion free network to its GSM customers, MTNL is
adding nearly 450 more Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) to existing 270 BTS in
Delhi and Mumbai. The company is also adding four lac lines each in Delhi and
Mumbai, for GSM and same number of lines for CDMA each in Delhi and Mumbai.
MTNL is moving towards realizing
its vision of becoming global telecom company with total telecom solutions at
affordable prices. The first phase of services of a joint venture of MTNL and
Nepal has already become operational. In Mauritius too, where company has
recently been awarded license for fixed, GSM and International Long Distance
services, a quick roll out is being planned.
I would like to emphasize here that inspite of
reduction by 48% in long distance call rates w.e.f. March 2003, the income of
the company has increased by Rs.996.88 million i.e. by 6.56%, net profit grew by
113.23% to Rs.4628.41million and net income from services went up by 4.16% to
Rs.15239.57 million for the quarter ending December 2003 as compared to
corresponding period of last year.
The company has paid the dividend
of 45% on the paid up capital of Rs.6300 million for the financial year 2002-03.
MTNL
since its inception nearly two decades ago has been providing the best of
services to its customers in Delhi and Mumbai at most affordable prices. With
58000 strong workforce, 492 state of the art digital exchanges and 1375.05 kms.
of optical fiber the company has unparallel infrastructure in Delhi and Mumbai.
It has become one of the Asia’s largest telecommunication company and first
Indian PSU to be listed at NYSE. The company will continue its journey to
excellence in providing the best services at affordable prices to its customers
and at the same time in the upkeep of its bottom-line.
